some good things!
Apr. 29th, 2026 10:56 pm- DID make it to the post office and get A Parcel into the post!
- DID make it to THE GYM, and was Charmed to notice that one of the other regulars was wearing unexpected-by-me nail varnish.
- We brought home many Field Treets and I am continuing to merrily vacuum them up with my horrid little mouth!
- Saw the bat! Hello bat. What a good bat you are.
- Very much enjoyed the Graun on a photographer who spent a year following the ZSL veterinary team (NB multiple images of post mortems in there).
- Negative electricity prices for a while in there today meant: Much More Laundry (most of which is dry), surprise and delight at A running the underfloor heating in the bathroom (WOM FEET); b r e a d; experimental autopyrolitic oven cleaning.
on a lighter note, have a meme
Apr. 29th, 2026 04:58 pmPut your mp3 player/phone/streaming collection on shuffle, and write down the first line of the first twenty songs. Post the poem that results.
Folks, I mostly listen to Final Fantasy music, which is largely instrumental! I don't think writing 20 lines of "Doo doo doo doo DOOO doo, doo-doo-doo doo doo doo doo doo" would make a good poem. Still, I wanted to give this a try, so I did the following:
1. Have iTunes set to Autoplay, which is its default mode now.
2. Play songs until one with lyrics played.
3. Write down the first line, if it was the first time the song appeared.
4. Write down the part of the refrain, if it was the second time the song appeared.
I did take some liberties now and then. Technically, the songs from NieR: Automata (which I have not played but listened to, thanks to FFXIV) do have lyrics but they have made-up lyrics, so I opted to skip over those. I also opted for a full phrase on many songs because I thought it made more impact. For "Wayward Daughter" I chose the first line in English. Finally, I limited it to 10 songs because they were starting to get repetitive.
Here's the result:
- Seeking the peace of reason ("Locus" - FFXIV: Heavensward)
- Westward lies bleed t'ward the east ("Wayward Daughter" - FFXIV: Stormblood)
- Staring at death, I take a breath, there's nothing left ("Oblivion - Never Let It Go Version" - FFXIV arrangement albums]
- Specie tua tantum carnem adme omnes habet cultum. [Through you alone there will be worship.] ("Apocalypsis Aquarius" - FFXV)
- For whom weeps the storm / Her tears on our skin / The days of our years gone / Our souls soaked in sin / These memories ache with the weight of tomorrow ("Shadowbringers", FFXIV: Shadowbringers)
- Wanting, I lie / Too weary to die / Too lost to the ice for saving / My sins claim me, untame me ("Return to Oblivion" - FFXIV: Shadowbringers)
- Beneath the gazing stars / Vales deep and forests dark / Betrayed by loyal hands, Her wrath stirred ("Heavensward", from the FFXIV expac of the same name)
- Let go this destiny, you're caught in a trance / Ever marking time inside a dream, no sign of advance ("Band: Locus" - FFXIV arrangment albums)
- The road that we walk / Is lost in the flood / Here proud angels bathe in / Their wages of blood / At this, the world's end, do we cast off tomorrow ("Insatiable", FFXIV:Shadowbringers)
- These voices screaming to let it go (never let go) / This time I'm screaming back no no no (go on say no) / My mind's made up, yeah my fear is gone (Where have you gone?) / Open my eyes now here I come, oblivion ("Oblivion - Never Let It Go Version" - FFXIV arrangement albums]
LOTS OF FFXIV. But yeah, the soundtracks that I own are mostly FFXIV soundtracks, so that's what iTunes thinks I want to hear.
This is the full list of songs that played, minus one from Animal Crossing that was thrown at me that I didn't include because I don't play Animal Crossing. So, 25 songs (including the Animal Crossing) one to get my 10 lines, and some of those ten songs were duplicates.
Full list
Locus [FFXIV: Heavensward]Westward Tide [FFXIV: Stormblood]
Wayward Daughter [FFXIV: Stormblood]
Home Sweet Home [Final Fantasy XV: Episode Prompto]
City Ruins - Rays of Light [from NieR: Automata, but also FFXIV: Shadowbringers)
Oblivion - Never Let It Go Version [Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward]
No Risk, No Reward [FFXVI, arrangement by Husky by the Geek]
Battle Theme (FFX)
"Apocalypsis Aquarius" [FFXV]
"Rolanberry Fields" [FFXI, arranged by the Nanaa Mihgo's]
"Crimson Sunset (Piano)" [FFXIV: Stormblood]
Shadowbringers [FFXIV, from expac of same name]
The Sanctuary of Zi'TaH [FFXI]
Song of the Ancients (Atonement) [NieR: Automata, but also FFXIV: Shadowbringers]
Piano: Serenity [FFXIV: A Realm Reborn]
Band: Locus [FFXIV arrangment albums]
Paradigm Shift [FFXII-2]
Largo from "Winter" The Seaosns [recorded by Arnie Roth playing violin]
On Windy Meadows [FFXIV Version 1.0 Limsa Lominsa area theme]
Noctis [FFXV - such a sweet song, I adore it]
Ink Long Dry: Piano [FFXIV, played by Keiko]
Insatiable [FFXIV: Shadowbringers]
Selbina [FFXI]
FFI: Chaos Temple [Arranged by Fantasy Reborn]
In a nutshell: Final Fantasy music is good! If you want to give it a try, you can find the Square Enix Music Channel on YouTube. There's also a lot of songs on iTunes and Spotify!
3W4DW Day 4 Check-in: PATCH DAY!!
Apr. 29th, 2026 08:43 am1. one creative thing I did today
Nada, it's patch day! Okay, I did answer one question on Ravelry. But I didn't do any creative work myself because I didn't have time. I'm fine with this.
2. one thing I'm proud of today
Well. I had intended to get up early and do the Alliance Raid before starting work, but then I didn't sleep well and got up later than intended. I considered doing the raid anyway, because I *do* set my own hours and thus they are flexible, but I thought, "Wouldn't you feel better doing the raid after having gotten some work done, so raid is now a reward?" So I chose to do work first. I'm pretty pleased with myself for having done so.
3. video game progress
PATCH DAY PATCH DAY PATCH DAY!!!! I did indeed do the Alliance Raid in the afternoon, and then MSQ after dinner. I had fun with both, but think I enjoyed the raid more (though MSQ's trial was FUN). This is not to say MSQ was bad! Just that the raid hit more of my pleasure centers from being a former FFXI player in its heyday.
I must link this tumblr post, which
Yoshi P should bring back Alaimbert of the Spiked Butt as a boss and give him a move called Butt Slider so he can say to fans: "Well? This is what you asked for, right?"
--verodynamix on tumblr
I wheezed laughing at that!
And now, SPOILER TIME! Here's my notes and reactions from the patch.
First up, alliance raid. This is very detailed, listing the bosses you face and some of their moves, so SPOILERS AHOY!
Alliance Raid SPOILERS
Alliance Raid clear! I rolled 99 on minion, whee!
first boss is Shantotto - There is no trash before her. She is quite formidable, as one might expect. I didn't recognize the music but I'm guessing it's from A Shantotto Ascension, an add-on scenario. I was tripped up by two mechs. First, she puts BLM's uh, sigil thingy they stand in, all over the arena. You need to dart into the one she's in and then follow her to other ones quickly. I didn't realize this at first and died. Also died twice to a move that I thought was a symbol that meant action was happening ON ME to the ENTIRE RAID, but I think everyone sees it on themselves? It's a wind move. Before she does it, she days a Tremor or Quake move that juts out pieces of the arena, you have to go in an alcove so you don't get blown away. This really confused me and I panicked first time and just stood there because it looked like it would affect EVERYONE and I didn't know the safe place to stand, if that makes sense. I finally got it after getting blown off a second time. Lots of deaths in this one, and I basically floor tanked.
next is Aht Urghan: BESIEGED!!! I was squeeing because I loved Besieged back in the day. It's a server-wide battle people can join and fight in. This is just a series of trash, but harder than normal trash.
then you get transported to Nzyul Isle and face Alexander, the boss of the Treasures of Aht Urhgan expac, leading someone to say "HOW MANY TIMES DO I NEED TO KILL YOU?" hahaha. I felt most of the moves for him were self-explanatory, just had difficulty DOING them. Wifh practice I should do better.
Next up is the Ru'met Gardens area where first you have some trash, but again, a little more difficult. There are pot-like enemies (not magic pots, more like obelisks I guess but we always called them pots). They have eye-like symbols painted on them, and just like FFXI, will do an attack in the direction they're gazing, so stay out of the AoEs,. I'd focus on them first. They're a Ae'ryn (SP?) add too, but that is not that bad. The pots are worse.
next boss is Promathia, the final boss of the Chains of Promathia expansion. - During the middle of this fight, you're transported/shifted to Promyvions, a dark creepy area. You will be fighting adds named Memory Receptacles. They do a move called Empty Seed, a knockback that you need to position yourself so you end up in one of the four corner walls. Besides that, this fight has a LOT of dodging, so stay nimble
last boss Phase 1 is Shinryu. Unfortunately, I had technically difficulties and blackscreened after the CS, so I missed the phase 1 fight (I had to crash the game and get back in). 🙁 I did make it back for second half! I won't spoil transition cutscene or final form, but again, there is a lot of dodging, and I think some moves will feel a little familiar.
I would be happy to go again with anyone who wants company ❤️
OMG I GOT CASTING HANDS TOO!! I had some RDMs in the party so I didn't expect to get it, with my poor roll. but yay!
also the cutscenes are gorgeous
And here's some reactions to MSQ:
MSQ reactions! SPOILERS!
first quest, bit of snark: man am I glad my glam is the Isle Explorer's outfit with the backpack so that when I retrieved the key, I could pretend I was pulling it out of the backpack and not my ass
still first quest: okay, what's with the dirt on Tataru's nose? It was immediately noticiable to me. guess I play more and see if they explain it!
second quest: dungeon already? okay then
post dungeon, on moon - livingway: "I don't foresee any major problems." gate: ROAR!!! Livingway: "Oh. Nope. We're doomed." I laughed very much at her delivery of that
unlocked trial, MUSIC TIME!!!! <3!!. Also, I chose the "no time to explain!" answer to Zero's "What are you doing here?" and she said "Leave it to you to state the obvious." and I laughed at that, too. I knew we'd see her again, but glad we ARE, because I missed her
whaaaat, why is queue 30 minutes? I expected a fast queue, but I guess everyone's hitting it at the same time and clogging the servers, boo
trial over: that was fun, and I don't think I died once, YAY!
I might natter more about it later, but right now I have to get ready for gym with mom.
Immersing myself back into the Soul Thief
Apr. 29th, 2026 08:23 amIt feels so good to step into this world again and spend time with the characters. I think it's one of the most original settings I've ever created and I'm enjoying it so much. I'm describing places and thinking, "I want to visit there too!!!" Later, I know I'll be describing a haunting location where many people die and I won't want to visit, but! It's still a cool building that I'd like to see from afar!! This is such a good time.
I think it also feels good to simply be writing words again. I have a bunch of stuff to rewrite, missing scenes, and so on. Stepping into a character's mind and experiencing the world from their perspective feels so nice. I spent most of March planning these revisions, and most of April finishing up the editing and proofreading of the Cursed Witch. (We do not talk about how far behind I am on my GYWO pledge 😨) It's just nice to putter around with words again! And thanks to all the planning I did last month, it feels like informed and useful changes rather than the kind of editing where I sputter about, unsure if my changes really improve anything or might not be making things worse actually. Of course, I could be lying to myself about that, but that's okay! I'm still embracing the good feels :D

Who is the best cook you know, and what makes their food special?
I'm going to say my mom, just because she is a good cook and she's always wanting to learn how to make new things
vital functions (ish)
Apr. 28th, 2026 10:29 pmLast week I:
- finished weaving in the ends on A's gloves (before we hit site for the first event of the year)
- read more She's A Beast
- ate a bunch of food I didn't have to cook (current experiment: do Lichfield brownie bars only taste That Good in a field?)
- explored Steeplechase LRP Centre when it had PEOPLE on it (and also when it didn't)
- including seeing a green woodpecker!
- and SO many birds of prey
- made a bunch of unilateral decisions about where tents would go directly affecting two other departments in response to external constraints, and redesigned internal tent layout on the fly in response to different external constraints, and... it all worked???
- rethought several steps in the lost property process and goodness that works way better and is much less stressful
and then today has been about half and half "sleep" and "endless lost property paperwork". And Now: To Bed.

3W4DW Day 3 Check-in
Apr. 27th, 2026 09:33 pm1. one creative thing I did today
It was not a good day for fiber arts.
So, May is almost here, which means the current round of Nerdopolis is ending, and I have yet to make anything for it. I dutifully tried to make something today: a pocket tissue cozy.
First I tried a knitted one, using the suggested needle size. I didn't get far before deciding I hated it. I was going to drop down in needle size (...several sizes) and try again, but the yarn wouldn't cooperate and for once I didn't have patience to deal with it.
So I gave up on that, and tried a crocheted one, but I hated how that was coming out too, even though I had only done a few rows. Today was just not a day for yarn crafts.
I opened my
2. one thing I'm proud of today
My job is a set-your-own-hours contract position. I love it, honestly. It's perfect for my lifestyle right now.
I usually set a goal of working 3 hours a day, but Mondays are not good days for me and I often fail to meet that goal. Today I not only met it, but exceeded it. I finished the current sheet I was working on, because I wanted it done. So I'm ahead of schedule for the rest of the week now, which may mean I don't end up working 4+ hours of Thursday or Friday again. That'll be nice!
Also felt therapy went well today, but that's all I'll say on a public post.
3. video game progress
Hahahaha nope. I had vague plans to play some Tactics after dinner, but mom needed help/needed me to listen to her rant about Facebook, and by the time we were done it was 8pm. And I'd have to hook up my Switch again because I brought it up to dogsitting, and well, TOO MUCH LIKE WORK.
I thought about messing around in FFXIV but was too tired for that, and besides, would rather save FFXIV energy for new patch tomorrow. I plan on doing the alliance raid first thing in the morning! And then MSQ after work/lunch.
Okay, I did play some WordScapes today, but I usually do, so ??? -- I'm of the opinion that casual phone games DEFINITELY count as gaming, but there's not much to report about an ongoing casual game. Though I will complain that some of their goals are ridiculous. Dear WordScapes: you are a WORD GAME. Folks like me are going to play maybe 20-30 minutes a day, tops. Why are you making it so the best achievements take considerably more time? ....okay, yes, I know: they want money, and think the way to get it is to have you play more. Well. I paid my $2.99 to remove ads from it ages ago, and I'm too good at the game to require hints (no seriously, I have like 15 rocket hints collecting dust, and it's NOT because of fear of using them like fear of using Elixirs in RPGs) so there's nothing to entice me to spend money. I'm happy with my 3-5 puzzles before bed.
signal boosting:
fanmix_monthly's 3W4DW challenge
Apr. 27th, 2026 08:42 pmAnyway! They are doing a prompt fest! Folks leave a comment with a fandom (and optionally, characters) and others comment with a song that reminds them of that.
My comment is here, and I'm looking for non-Final Fantasy songs that remind you of Final Fantasy XIV characters (except Zenos, I can't stand him.) I thought I'd post here because there's a handful of you following me who are FF fans... maybe you have some ideas?
Monday Media - April 27 Edition
Apr. 27th, 2026 03:40 pmBoth games are great fun. I like Eldritch Horror even more than Arkham Horror, I think because its whole-of-globe canvas just feels like the appropriate setting for 1920s pulp/supernatural horror to my brain. And while both Wingspan and Wyrmspan are both gorgeous and I love birds, I really love fantasy dragons, so I'm an easy mark for the latter. Nor did it hurt that I'm currently reading Novik's Buried Deep (and am about to start Brennan's Onyx Court) and so would have had dragons on the brain even if there weren't a few Temeraire-verse stories in the anthology.
Movies: The anime fan-subset of the Geek BBQers wrapped up our Rebuild of Evangelion (re)watch. As one of the viewers who watched the original anime back in the day but had not seen any of the remakes before, I was not quite sure what to expect (and still have vivid memories of watching a bunch of very upset and equally committed otaku protesting the release of 2.0 at the movie theater across the street from my workplace in Kyoto). I enjoyed it! It was definitely a nostalgia trip but also interesting to watch knowing 1000 percent more about Japan's domestic experience of WWII versus viewing it through the lens of adolescent angst (Everything is so hard and no one understands me!) We tackled Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo and Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time during this session, meaning I was wholly out to sea as to what would happen in many places. But it felt like the new stuff dovetailed really well with the original, the new additions were fun, and (without spoiling anything) there was a lot about it that I felt improved on the original while still keeping its patented "psychological turmoil as interpreted through Christian mysticism by someone who did not grow up Christian"-weirdness vibe.
Music: We saw Carpenter Brut and Health at the "Okay but not great" concert venue. Carpenter Brut was fabulous We got our tickets months ago when the show was first announced and were bemused to learn that it had sold out in the meantime. As a result, we did not arrive early and did not have great sightlines on the stage for the first half of Carpenter Brut's set. But honestly? There was not much to be seen anyway, given that Carpenter Brut is primarily an auditory experience. And it was an experience: his music is eerie and foreboding enough on a set of earbuds or speakers. In a proper venue it is wicked.
Health was a bit of surprise. I mainly knew them as "the guy that remixed that Crystal Castles track" and was surprised to learn that "that guy" was actually an entire band, and that said band has been around for about 20 years. We'd assumed, judging from the venue info and the tickets, that Carpenter Brut was the headliner (as did most of the crowd, who took off after Carpenter Brut's set ended) but upon realizing that Health was actually the main acted, said "Eh, we already paid for it" and decided to stick around. Their guitarist's cringe high school jock jokes aside, they're actually pretty good. Their vocalist sounds like the forlorn lovechild of maynard keenan and Brian Molko, and their music is clearly pretty heavily inspired by APC, NIN, and the like. Having only heard it once I have no real opinion on theme or lyrics, but I would certainly listen to it again.
Podcasts/Articles: Too many to mention them all, but I did revisit Patrick Radden Keefe's A Teen's Fatal Plunge Into the London Underworld while I wait for my hold on London Falling to come in. (Guys, Keefe is one of my favorite nonfiction authors and I lust after this book. Luckily, I'm only about #17003 on 35 copies! 😒)
Roleplaying: Having Put Together A Crew(TM) from the star players of our various D&D homebrew and official campaigns, the GC held a pretty excellent Session Zero for a new Wild Beyond the Witchlight campaign. I am playing a fey swarmmaster druid, who I'm envisioning as a sort of fish-out-of-water by virtue of the fact that as a few amongst a bunch of human children in the feywild, she's the only one who 1) knows what's going on, but 2) doesn't know how out of their element any of the others are.
Television: AEW continues to be an absolute delight. My heart and soul increasingly belong to Thekla, who is about as close to an IRL incarnation of Karlach as I think this timeline can get. Her Collision match with Alex Windsor was fire. Pac versus Lio Rush was a verrrrry close second; I love how good Pac was at playing the straight man to Rush's Smeagol-brand creepiness, which made me an instafan. (Seriously, it's the best wrestling creepiness since Velveteen Dream. Also, Pac continues to be criminally underrated and underused.) Mina Shirakawa and Hikaru Shida's Japanese smacktalk is fabulous. Nick Wayne made Mox look both fast and not boring 😂, Brody King continues to dominate, MJF continues to be the consummate heel, and FTR and Stokely will always crack me up. This is an absolute match and storyline golden era, and not even the unnecessary reintroduction of Jericho can spoil it.
Video Games: It's been a dry period for me for video gaming, but I am casually spectating as the GC plays his way through Metaphor, which, hysterically, he keeps inadvertently referring to as "Persona", and which, hysterically, everyone still knows what he's talking about.

Weird dream channel — The Japanese Navy
Apr. 27th, 2026 11:31 amI'm still here. The antiseizure medicine crosstaper has been wreaking havoc on my energy levels, so I haven't been able to do as much as anything as I would like, which including posting and reading here, but the dream I had last night was so strange I wanted to be sure to tell you all about it:
I dreamed I had enlisted in the Japanese Navy. I was going to be serving on a submarine. I was going to be. . . *drumroll please*. . . a cake decorator!
Unfortunately, I woke up before I got to see how myself in action, but I'd like to take a moment to thank my recruiting officer, Bonnie, for believing in me and convincing me to sign up.
Also, oddly, in my dream the Japanese Navy didn't have boot camp or anything like it. You signed the forms with your recruiting officer, you walked down the hall to a place that looked like a cafeteria, where you were handed a paper bag containing your uniforms and sundries, and then you walked through a door and down a ramp onto the ship. Apparently everything after that was on-the-job training.
3W4DW Day 2 Check-in
Apr. 26th, 2026 09:30 pm1. one creative thing I did today
Worked on a swatch for a knitted tee. Just a row or two, but I touched it.
When I got home, I did some searching on Ravelry to find something for a Nerdopolis challenge. For those new around here: Nerdopolis is a crafting tournament in which we get themes to craft to. One of the themes this month is "deep space objects", so I've been looking for stuff that is reminiscent of spiral galaxies.
I found a great hat that I wanted to knit, but (a) I wasn't sure I'd have time because it was densely knit worsted weight AND double-layered, (b) I went to purchase it and it said "This designer is not taking payments at this time." Tried their Etsy store, and it's closed. Ah, well. I had previously started a crocheted doily that I might finish, but I wasn't digging it, so I dunno. The end of round is coming, though, so I'll need to make SOMETHING.
2. one thing I'm proud of today
I cleaned the house before I left, to my satisfaction. Also left a note to say how good the dog was, here's some things they should know about, and thanking them for trusting me with their home and dog.
3. video game progress
I logged into FFXIV just so my console would be ON (I had shut it down completely before I left), which meant I did the PlayStation 5 OS upgrade and new TOS agreement. Now the console is asleep, or will be soon. I'm purposely leaving it sleeping so when patch hits tomorrow night, it gets updated and I won't have to wait for it before I play on Tuesday morning. I didn't do much in game, just checked retainers (they sold a bunch of things! That's what happens when you don't log in for over a week) and spent some poetics on HW relic materials.
and that's it for today.

3W4DW Day One Check-in
Apr. 26th, 2026 07:21 amAnyway: during the gear-up to the start of 3W4DW, I had decided I would post daily during the celebration with some check-ins. Here's the check-in for day one. We will ignore it is now day 2.
1. one creative thing I did today
Not much, but I worked on a swatch for a tee I'm going to knit! Actually, I already started the tee, but (a) I misread the pattern, (b) the icord edge was really tight and making everything look sloppy, so I decided to start over, this time doing a proper swatch instead of just diving in.
I also asked
Currently, my Final Fantasy XI fanscripts are laid out as one expansion's entire mission line on one page, though I have horizontal rules between each mission, and also have "jump to" links at the end of each mission to jump to a different mission. Example page: https://altheavalara.neocities.org/ffxi/rotz
I'm banging my head against those jump-to links. I'm working on documenting the next expac in the series, so I need to put the jump-tos in to be consistent, but... I hand-coded them, and that is a pain. I was trying to figure out if I can automatically insert them with Jekyll magic, but I'm stumped (Jekyll is my static site generator).
So now I'm wondering if it would be better to split the expansion into separate pages for each mission. I could possibly use Jekyll magic for pagination, then. It would mean a LOT more pages on the site, but may be easier to handle? There's benefits and drawbacks to both methods. As a reader, what would you prefer?
2. one thing I'm proud of today
I started cleaning up! I'll be going home today and would like to leave the house pretty much how I left it, so I gathered dirty dishes and garbage and took care of that. I need to run the dishwasher and handwash some dishes, but I'm proud of the start I made instead of leaving it to last minute.
Also, I posted my list of community recs again, as I said I would when 3W4DW started. Go me for following through on a plan.
3. video game progress
Well, being away from home means less video gaming. I pretty much just played WordScapes on my phone. Not much to report there. But I also answered some questions on Mastodon from someone who had FFXIV Free Trial questions, and reposted my starter guide from Bsky to Mastodon... which I might have already done in the past, but whatever, it's reposted.
